Ideas Are Easy; Recognizing Brilliance is Hard

July 23, 2013 • Management Practice, News

HBR’s David Burkus tells us that it’s not hard to get the ideas flowing and argues that the real management challenge is spotting the good ones.  He reports a Wharton study that suggests the reason for this is simply uncertainty.  I can attest simply from my experience with dot Leader that it’s easy to find lots of ideas (only you can say how good I am at picking and choosing).  But when someone could lose their job or damage her career for guessing wrong it’s often easiest not to guess at all.  The truism in Hollywood is that no one ever got fired for spiking a script; it’s green-lighting one that takes courage.  Managers need to find ways to reduce the risk of backing an idea, and share the kudos.
