Thousands of New Top Level Domains a Step Closer

July 6, 2013 • News, Standards & Regulation

The ICANN has announced the approval by its board of the new 2013 Registry Agreement, under which registrars will be able to offer the new generic Top Level Domain names.  For those feeling confined by the same old .com, .net and .org choices, the gTLD explosion is going to be a wild adventure of claim-staking, and probably litigation.  The DMV could clash with winemakers over .vin.  Will an eyeglass retailer be able to register goggle.plus?  And might the Rhinoplasty Society try to prevent the registration of www.spearmint.rhino?  Actually, that last one isn’t on the list of new gTLDs, but you get the idea.  Readers may wish to look up the new options for industry and technology-specific gTLDs to see where they might want to position themselves in the coming gold rush, which will get under way towards the end of the year or early next.
